O Gelato is relocating from DeVargas Center to a larger location at 301 N. Guadalupe St.
"We've been in this space about a year and we're looking at other spaces for things we want to do," including serving beer, wine, sandwiches and small plates, said David Maple, owner of the business with his wife, Shelby Fonley.
The new space, most recently the home of Tart's Treats, is 1,900 square feet, compared with just 500 square feet at DeVargas Center site.
Maple added: "The biggest thing is the hours. We want to be open at 11 p.m. on a Saturday night. Timing restraints were hurting us." DeVargas Center doesn't allow for those late-night hours.
Once the business has relocated, Maple and Fonley want to transform the business into an Italian-inspired dessert bar with more cakes and more flavors of gelato. Only eight of the business' 12 regular flavors can be sold at any one time at the DeVargas store.
Also to be served will be what the Italians call "savory plates, with bruschetta and our own panini," Maple said. "Or on Friday night we might offer hand-made pasta and pizza."
Maple and Fonley expect to complete the relocation by the middle of June. "Our customers are very excited about it," Maple said. "We've had a lot of fun, incredible relationships with our customers."

The Santa Fe Association of Realtors has been recognized by the National Association of Realtors as a Commercial Real Estate Accredited Association.
The Santa Fe association earned the recognition by meeting certain benchmarks and engaging Realtor members at a high level with commercial services, a statement said. SFAR president JoAnne Vigil Coppler and president-elect Dan Wright were presented with the award at NAR's Mid-Year conference held annually in Washington, D.C.
"We're delighted to be the first local Realtor association to have earned this commercial real estate distinction in New Mexico," Vigil Coppler wrote. "The Commercial Overlay Board in New Mexico known as the Commercial Association of Realtors New Mexico also holds this distinction."
