ESPAÑOLA — Authorities in Rio Arriba County say a man considered the prime suspect in a double homicide case in the community of Hernández is dead.

County sheriff’s officials say 20-year-old Tomas J. Sanchez was one of two people found dead inside a trailer that had been set on fire in Medanales last weekend.

Sheriff Tommy Rodella told KRQE-TV that Sanchez was the top suspect in the Dec. 10 deaths of two Hernández men.

Rodella says 53-year-old Matthew Maestas and 47-year-old Joseph Eugene Valdez both were shot at least five times.

Authorities say the men were found dead in Maestas’s trailer home north of Española, and the victims appear to have been targeted by someone they knew.

They say deputies identified Sanchez as a suspect through tips and confidential sources.
