1853 Sisters of Loretto open school to youth from across New Mexico.
1859 Christian Brothers establish St. Michael's College.
1860 Legislation places schools under jurisdiction of probate judges.
1863 New law creates Board of Education with members including governor, Supreme Court justices and archbishop.
1884 Legislature modernizes school system, defining local districts and establishing funding system.
1887 St. Catherine Indian School opens; it would operate for 111 years.
1890 Santa Fe Indian School opens.
1896 Santa Fe Public Schools comes into being.
1963 Santa Fe Prep begins classes.
1964 St. John's College opens.
1983 Legislature establishes Santa Fe Community College.
1988 Capital High School opens, giving city a second public high school.
2009-2010 For-profit Laureate Education takes over College of Santa Fe and changes name to Santa Fe University of Art and Design.
