The New Mexico Department of Public Safety on Monday sent out a warning that online courses do not meet the legal requirements to obtain a concealed carry permit.

According to spokesman Lt. Robert McDonald of the New Mexico State Police, many people around the state have inquired about the validity of online concealed carry training courses.

"The Departments Special Investigation Division, Concealed Carry Unit has not approved any online classes," McDonald wrote in an email. "Such training does not comply with the guidelines set forth in the New Mexico Concealed Handgun Carry Act or associated rules and regulations.

"New Mexico residents should be aware that the completion of an online class does not meet the requirements for the purpose of being licensed to carry a concealed handgun by the State of New Mexico."

McDonald did not include the names or websites of any specific online courses that people have inquired about.
