Funeral services are planned today for Bruce Mondragón, the 25-year-old Northern New Mexico motorcyclist who died last week.

A funeral Mass for Mondragón starts at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Church in Abiquiú with burial immediately following in Medanales.

Mondragón worked as an equipment service worker in the city of Santa Fe's Transit Division, co-worker Annette Granillo said.

He was helping support his three children — Juanito, 4, Santiago, 3, and Esperanza, 3 months — while his wife, Edwina, was enrolled in school full time, according to someone familiar with Mondragón.

Mondragón was riding his motorcycle Wednesday morning and was struck in the intersection of U.S. 285 and N.M. 30 by Andrew I. Trujillo, 28, who was driving a Toyota Camry and had been clocked going 106 mph a few minutes before the collision, Española Police Lt. Christian Lopez said. Police said bottles of alcohol were found in Trujillo's car and he smelled like alcohol. Trujillo has been charged with vehicular homicide.

Granillo said Mondragón had been studying hard to obtain his commercial driver's permit, and he had passed the written test for his permit the day before the accident.

"That was a big accomplishment for him," said Granillo, paratransit operations manager for the city.

She said Mondragón was a positive person who took pride in his work and being a father. "He really was always a happy-go-lucky guy," she said. "He loved his family dearly. He was just a really nice person to have around."

A memorial fund for Mondragón's wife and children has been set up at Los Alamos National Bank under the name "God Bless You."
