A motorcyclist who was struck by a car on U.S. 285 died Thursday, said Española police Lt. Christian Lopez.

Bruce Mondragon of Medanales, riding his Harley-Davidson, had just turned into the intersection of N.M. 30 and U.S. 285 around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The driver of a 1996 Toyota Camry, Andrew I. Trujillo, 28, of Española hit Mondragon in the intersection, Lopez said. Trujillo was clocked at driving 106 mph by an officer on N.M. 30, and by the time the officer made a U-turn to follow Trujillo, the accident had already happened, Lopez said.

Charges against Trujillo have been upgraded to homicide by vehicle, Lopez said.

Officers found alcohol containers, including whiskey, in Trujillo's car and said he smelled like alcohol, Lopez said. Police obtained a warrant to extract a blood sample from Trujillo and are awaiting blood-alcohol content results.

Online court records show Trujillo was charged with DWI in December of 2008, but the charge was dismissed.

Mondragon, who was not wearing a helmet, was airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque after the accident.

According to Lopez, Mondragon was married and had two young children.
