A man was killed Friday afternoon in a community outside of Española after his ex-girlfriend's father allegedly shot him following "several altercations," the Rio Arriba County Sheriff's Office reported.

Jake Arnold, spokesman for the agency, said Martin Martinez was being held on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter following the 4:40 p.m. shooting of Marcos Atencio in Chamita Village.

Arnold said that interviews with family members indicated that Atencio, who had dated Martinez's daughter, had gone to the family's house "multiple" times throughout the day, each visit resulting in disputes between the family and Atencio.

Atencio and the Martinez family are residents of the small community about six miles north of Española.

According to Arnold, throughout the day the girlfriend and her family repeatedly had asked Atencio to leave.

Deputies responded to calls reporting a domestic dispute at the Martinez house. Once there, Martinez voluntarily led deputies to the handgun he had used in the shooting, according to Arnold.

The number of shots authorities believe were fired was not released.
