This column wraps up this season's coverage of the regional snow sliding scene, but certainly not the end of skiing and snowboarding. Most resorts will be open into early April, while some — such as Wolf Creek — are likely to roll into late April or even May to June — as Arapaho Basin often does. In fact, March is often the second-snowiest month in this region, after the normal heavy snow of February, and can provide some great corn snow as well. And as we all know, it can even snow in May or even early June here, so if you take to the mountains then for hiking or biking, be prepared!

Ski Santa Fe, with a decent 48-inch base, will likely close on April 3, but meanwhile has a string of special events lined up, as do most regional resorts. On March 19, it hosts the final "Beats on the Basin" live music show, from noon to 3 p.m. with the Keith Sanchez band. On March 20, it holds the 6th annual Tessa Horan Ascension, an endurance race up and down the mountain that is open to all levels of skiers, snowboarders and even snowshoers. It begins at 5:45 p.m. For additional details, see the Ski Santa Fe website's events section. And, on March 23, join in the fun of the 23rd annual Gladfelter Memorial Bump Contest. Providing live music will be The Bus Tapes.

Sunday will be the last day at Sandia Peak Ski Area.

Angel Fire, with a 42-inch base, closes out the season on March 27. On March 12 it hosts a USASA Slopestyle skier and snowboarder competition in Liberation Park. Contact Dave Smith at 505-603-7254 for details. On March 17, join the resort's St. Patrick's Day Celebration with live music in the Village Haus from 7-10 p.m.

Taos Ski Valley, with an uncommonly mundane 49-inch base, wraps up the Solomon Extreme Freeride Championships today and tomorrow. If you can't make it to see the exciting comp, you can catch the action live on the resort's website. Taos will also host a "Steeps Camp/Mountain Experience" on March 12-13. It costs $160. Skiers and boarders will hike the ridge and find the best of Taos' exciting terrain along with good friends and expert guides. It's for advanced to expert skiers/riders, level 7+. It will close out the season on April 3 with a pond skimming contest.

Telluride has a 59-inch base, with the entire mountain open, except for some of the Upper Gold Hill Chutes. This includes runs such as Senior's and Roy Boy off the summit of 13,320-foot Palmyra Peak, which requires a two-hour hike from the top of the Prospect Lift. Telluride will close on April 3.

To go with the good snow and spring sun, the resort is offering some attractive vacation packages for families. March spring break packages start from $101 per person, per night, based on maximum occupancy. Book any condo or private home and get the fourth night free during the month. To qualify, call 800-778-8581 and use the promotional code "Mar4." There are also Guys Trip and Girls Weekend offers, which include a fourth night free, fourth person skis/rides free. A four-night minimum stay is required for the offer. All offers are based on availability.

The ski school offers lessons for children age 3 through 12. The Afternoon Kids Club entertains kids after their lessons so that parents can enjoy a full day on the mountain or around town. It's complementary for all children enrolled in the Children's Ski & Snowboard School. Children's environmental education programs can be booked daily. Experienced instructors provide kids an opportunity to connect with, and learn more about, Telluride's unique, local environment. Snowshoe tours, as well as guided backcountry experiences, are available. There's even a kids' night out offered Monday through Friday, which allows parents a night out. The kids are treated to outdoor activities, movies, and dinner.

Crested Butte, with a fine 81-inch base (including 34 inches this past week) also dishes up some spring savings to go with its exceptionally good conditions. From March 18-April 4, get your third night of lodging (at select properties) and third day of skiing for free. Call 800-810-7669 for details.

On March 17-19, more than 100 free-heelers will take to the slopes to compete in the resort's 15th annual Extreme Telemark Freeskiing Championships, complete with welcome reception and awards party. The two-day big mountain event attracts the biggest names in the telemark industry and is unique to Crested Butte. Free telemark demos and specialty clinics also take place. On March 20, it holds the Al Johnson Uphill/Downhill Ski Race. This popular telemark race is named after a diehard 19th-century Crested Butte mailman who delivered mail to remote mining camps. Hundreds of costumed participants ascend 600 vertical feet to the crest of the North Face, and then race down the double black diamond terrain to the finish. On April 2, the resort hosts a pond skimming event and a Bump & Jump Contest. The resort closes April 3.

Silverton Mountain has a fat 100-inch base, and with its high elevations, this should hold up. It is open Thursdays-Sundays in March for guided skiing only. The unguided option returns April 1-3, April 8-10 and April 16-17.
