Jambo Café garnered the Best Soup Award for the third consecutive year at Saturday's 18th annual Souper Bowl.

The event drew about 1,200 soup tasters, a record-breaker for the event, and raised $80,000 to benefit the hungry through The Food Depot. The attendees voted for their favorite fare from among dozens of offerings, all prepared by staff from Santa Fe restaurants.

Jambo Café's winning soup was a basil-ginger roasted butternut squash soup with crab. The soup also won awards for Best Seafood Soup and Best Decorated Table.

The Pantry Restaurant received the Best Cream Soup prize for its creamy green chile chicken soup. The Best Savory Soup honor went to Tune-Up Cafe for its tortilla chicken lime with cream cheese and avocado. Santa Fe Capitol Grill captured the Best Vegetarian Soup honor for its cream of zucchini entry.

Guests took home Souper Bowl cookbooks in the form of three-ring binders with soup recipes from many Santa Fe chefs. The cookbooks also are available from The Food Depot website, www.thefooddepot.org, for $15. New recipes will be offered for purchase each year.

At the event, Food Depot Executive Director Sherry Hooper, Santa Fe Mayor David Coss and Congressman Ben Ray Luján announced expansion plans for the food bank, made possible in part by a $1 million donation by Food Depot Board President Barbara Hall. Hall is challenging the community to raise matching funds for her gift.
