Today begins the pageantry that is the high school state basketball tournament, which culminates Saturday after New Mexico crowns five boys teams and five girls teams as champions from Class A to AAAAA.
These faces will be seen Wednesday cheering their Española Valley Sundevils against the Grants Pirates in an AAAA boys quarterfinal at 6:30 p.m. in The Pit at Albuquerque. They'll show the passion of a community rallying around its team in pursuit of an elusive state title.
The New Mexican will be there to cover every moment in The Pit and in Rio Rancho's Santa Ana Star Center, starting with today's 8 a.m. opening tip-off for an AAA girls semifinal between St. Michael's and Portales.
Inside today's newspaper, you'll find a tournament preview of Classes AA through AAAA for the boys and girls, including the brackets. The cover story tells about Española's long love affair with basketball.
Today's sports section also has a feature on the Española girls team, which made a tremendous turnaround from a winless program three years ago to become a favorite in AAAA.
Our sports Web site (www.santafenewmexican.com/sports) will feature live blogs and updates of tournament games as they happen.
It promises to be a fun five days, and we hope to bring you the stories behind the thrills and the tears.
