A 24-year-old man was hit by a stray bullet at a downtown Allsup's Friday evening after two men got into a fight at a gas pump.
Santa Fe police Lt. Abram Anaya said the unidentified victim was shot in the abdomen at 6:22 p.m. at Allsup's, 305 N. Guadalupe St., off Paseo de Peralta; he sustained injuries that were not life threatening.
"It's a case of being in the wrong place [at] the absolute worst time," Anaya said.
According to Anaya, witnesses said a man approached the suspected shooter at a pump while he was gassing up his 1969 blue Chevy Camaro. The man, who allegedly instigated the fight, apparently slapped the Camaro owner's hand down on his hood, which sparked the altercation.
The suspect then brandished a black semi-automatic handgun, according to Anaya, and shot a single round into the ground.
"At this point, it is unknown if it was an accidental discharge or if it was intentional," Anaya said.
The bullet then ricocheted off the ground and into the victim, who was talking on the pay phone just outside the convenience store.
The shooter is described as a 25- to 30-year-old man standing 6-foot-1 with a long brown ponytail and square prescription glasses.
Police do not know what precipitated the fight at the pump.
Anaya said the shooter faces charged of negligent use of deadly weapon and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
He fled in his Camaro, license plate No. 145PJS, heading eastbound on Paseo de Peralta before officers arrived on the scene.
The man who instigated the fight fled in his own vehicle.
