Actress Marilu Henner of Taxi fame has been in town visiting family. She was spotted Dec. 29 at both Doodlet's and Pasqual's — two of the city's most visited destinations just across the street from each other, which makes going from shopping to supping as easy as eating hot squash pie.
That reminds us, years ago we asked Gourmet magazine to wheedle the recipe for Pasqual's two-squash, three-cheese torta out of chef/owner Katharine Kagle. They did. They printed it. We loved it. But we lost it in a move. KK, if you read this, would you let the secret out again? Just email it to elmitote@sfnewmexican.com. We'll be forever in your debt.
Two sightings at Hastings recently of distinguished people even El Mitotero knows at once — City Councilor Patti Bushee, and artist Tony Abeyta. Whether we'd walk up and talk to them is something else, though. Despite the blabbermouth newspaper persona, El Mit is actually a shy and gentle person, hesitant to disturb others and meek as a lamb ... and we have a bridge to sell you.
It's not often that Mitote gets a Steven Spielberg sighting, so news that the legendary Hollywood director was in Santa Fe this past week turned heads.
Maybe he was here celebrating New Year's or enjoying a belated 65th birthday, but Spielberg toured the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and stopped in at the gift shop. His latest film, War Horse, opened at Regal Santa Fe Stadium 14 Christmas week.
There's an old saying — more people know Tom Fool than Tom Fool knows. Which means, don't be surprised if someone pops up in the middle of the Plaza or in a restaurant or on the Rail Runner and seems to know everything about you, while you have not the faintest idea who they are or how they know you.
That's when the ability to engage in social hypocrisy is invaluable — to be able to talk around, above and below every topic that comes up, giving the impression that of course you remember them, but that you're such good friends, it's only natural to say "you" rather than "Mr. X," or "Mrs. Y" or "Zelda Jane." Of course you could take the honest route and say, "I'm just getting over partial amnesia. Strangest case the doctor has ever seen. So who are you?" Well, semi-honest.
