From The Santa Fe New Mexican:

Nov. 18, 1911:
When the Democratic State Committee met in Santa Fe the newsboys sold hundreds of newspapers. When the Legislature meets the increase in the sale of all newspapers is marked. But the presence of some 400 teachers and educators in Santa Fe the past few days has made hardly any difference in the sales. The cause is not difficult to ascertain. The average politician is free and easy with his money; the average teacher has had to skimp on his meager salary to make his trip to Santa Fe and a nickel has to be turned three times before it is spent.

Nov. 18, 1986:
Santa Fe residents can have their pets spayed or neutered for only $5 thanks to a special Christmas season subsidy program offered by the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. Through the generosity of the late Helen Parks Edwards, who left the shelter money in her will, the shelter can help pay for spaying or neutering. The city's veterinarians are also cooperating in the program. Pet owners can go to the shelter during regular working hours and for $5 receive a coupon or purchase order that can be taken to any local vet to be used to pay for the services.
