Dec. 10, 1961: A new research report on New Mexico classroom teachers' salaries provides some interesting insight into how the state school "equalization" fund is equalizing. For example, money for teachers' pay is so "equal" that starting salaries for those with a bachelor's degree varies all the way from a low of $4,000 in some counties up to $4,600 in others. Starting pay for those with Masters degrees ranges all the way from $4,200 up to $4,900. Generally speaking, the rural counties — which have a tough time getting teachers willing to work out in the boonydocks anyway — are able to pay substantially less than are the urban centers, where teachers have all the modern conveniences.
Dec. 10, 1986: A municipal judge said he will continue to periodically dismiss parking fines despite complaints by a city official that his actions deprive the city of money to improve downtown parking. Municipal Judge Tom Fiorina last week dismissed more than $7,000 in parking fines owed by 53 individuals allowing violators to donate money and food to local charitable organizations.
A jail employee goofed Friday when he accidentally released an inmate who faced up to 223 years in prison for armed robbery. Carlos Joseph Hall, 34, walked out of the Santa Fe County Detention Center a free man despite a judge's order that he be held without bond until sentencing. The jail received papers from Magistrate Court authorizing Hall's release but didn't notice or receive other papers binding over the man to District Court.
