Feb. 4, 1962: Washington -- President John F. Kennedy tightened the U.S. economic squeeze on Cuba on Saturday, ordering a complete ban on imports of Cuban products. The action will cost Cuba $35 million a year.
New York -- Hayden Planetarium on Saturday reported its telephone lines flooded with "thousands" of worried calls asking about a rare planetary alignment and eclipse, which Asian astrologists predict will bring the end of the world. "We tell them it's a natural astronomical event, that there will be no effect on Earth, and that it's happened before," a spokesman said. "Most of them are reassured."
Feb. 4, 1987: The sponsor of a state resolution calling for a constitutional amendment to make English the official language of New Mexico said it will help immigrants fulfill the American dream. However, Santa Fe residents and legislators contend the resolution is divisive, discriminatory and will do no good. The amendment would require the state to pass laws "to ensure that the role of English as the common language of the state of New Mexico is preserved and enhanced." It also would allow any resident of the state to sue the government to enforce the laws.
