James Ruiz has a lengthy criminal record, not only of drunken-driving arrests, but also of traffic infractions. The following list was compiled from online records at state District Court and Metropolitan Court in Albuquerque, as well as paper records from Santa Fe Municipal Court and New Mexico DWI Czar Rachel O'Connor. All arrests took place in Santa Fe unless otherwise noted:

May 1993: Careless driving

June 1993: Speeding, no insurance

June 1995: Illegal left-hand turn, unlawful use of license

December 1995: DWI, having an open container of alcohol in his car, no license, speeding, no insurance, possession of marijuana

April 1998: Driving the wrong way on a one-way street

February 1999: No insurance, driver inattention

January 2001: DWI (Albuquerque)

June 2003: Aggravated DWI, speeding, careless driving

June 2004: Use of the telephone to intimidate or harass

July 2004: Negligent use of a deadly weapon (Albuquerque)

2005: DWI (Farmington)

December 2005: Possession of an open container of alcohol, no driver's license (Cuba)

August 2006: Battery, domestic violence (Albuquerque)

September 2006: Battery, domestic violence (Albuquerque)

May 2007: Driving without a license (Albuquerque)

October 2007: Shoplifting (Albuquerque)

May 2008: DWI

March 2010: Two counts vehicular homicide, driving with a revoked license
