Anika Amon has been around Santa Fe Preparatory’s girls basketball program long enough to know that, even with a 14-win résumé, the odds aren’t great for a postseason berth.
Maybe more wins like Monday night will help the Prep head coach feel more confident for a playoff bid.
The Blue Griffins got 17 points from Olivia Cicci and 11 from Maddy Fort in a 59-43 win over Monte del Sol in District 2AA action at Christian Life.
Prep (14-9, 5-2) is assured of the No. 2 seed in next week’s district tournament behind unbeaten regular season champion Mora.
The Griffins are seeking a rare trip to state. They’ve been there only once since Amon’s senior season in 1997, that coming in 2006 when they finished second to Mora in district and qualified for regionals — which, technically speaking, were not officially part of the state tournament.
Prep trailed Monday’s game 9-6 after the first quarter but opened things up with its full-court press. The Griffins outscored the Lady Dragons (11-12, 2-5) by a 21-8 count in the second quarter, then 22-10 in the third.
“Once our press started working, things got going for us offensively,” Amon said. “When you start scoring, your legs get lighter and you start moving better on the press.”
Monte del Sol’s Celeste Baca finished with a season-high 24 points, 13 in the fourth quarter. Prep’s Alexis Mundt added nine.
“Santa Fe Prep girls basketball is not in the playoff conversation very much,” Amon said. “Our feeling is, unless we can pull of a great win against Mora in the district tournament then we haven’t guaranteed anything. We have to earn our spot.”
