It wasn't the Baseball Gods, but Mother Nature, who smiled on the Demons of Santa Fe High School on Tuesday afternoon.

"We're happy to get a good day to play baseball," said John Morrison, Santa Fe High head coach. "There was no snow, no rain, and our guys executed pretty well."

The Demons scored 10 runs in their first three innings en route to a 14-5 nondistrict victory over the Horsemen of St. Michael's.

Santa Fe High is 1-0. St. Michael's is 0-2.

C.J. Roybal and Raul Trejo collected three hits apiece for the Demons. Each plated a run, as did Everett Ortega, who went 2-for-4.

Matt Padilla notched the win. The Santa Fe High starter went six innings, yielding five hits and five runs. He struck out nine.

Charles Gonzales hit a two-run home run in the first and Michael Hernandez added a solo home run in the second for the Horsemen.

Hernandez suffered the loss.

"We're both racing a little up hill because of the weather," Morrison said. "It wasn't a good February, what with all the snow. It's going to be a slow start for both teams."

The Demons hope to find cloudless skies in Albuquerque for the St. Pius X Invitational.

Santa Fe High opens the three-day, eight-team tournament at 3:30 Thursday afternoon against a team from El Paso.
