They each brought something special to the Mayfield football team, and together kept the Trojans' title train rolling through another season.
The leader of the offense once again was Matt Sandoval, at a generous 5-foot-7 and 160 pounds not the most intimidating figure on a football field.
The best athlete on the team was arguably senior Nathan Enriquez, who starred on both sides of the ball as a wide receiver and defensive back.
Then there was senior Freddy Young, the son of former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Fred Young. The Young pedigree kicked in so well this past season that Freddy Young's play surprised even his coaches.
Behind that trio, along with defensive players such as Jose Bustillos, Neil Dolly, Jeremy Gutierrez and Yanni Suter, the Trojans again went undefeated against New Mexico opponents and won their third straight Class AAAAA state championship.
All of the above Trojans were named to the first team All-State team announced by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association. The association's All-State squad was selected in voting by AAAAA coaches statewide.
Enriquez earned first team honors at wide receiver and defensive back, while Young was named to the first team defensive secondary and also was selected to the second team offense at wide receiver. Both have made verbal commitments to attend The University of New Mexico next fall.
Enriquez caught 27 passes for 607 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. He also led the team in interceptions with seven, including one he returned for a touchdown in the Trojans' state title win over Clovis. The multitalented Enriquez also returned two punts for touchdowns, averaged 22 yards on kickoff returns and was the team's punter, averaging 39 yards per boot.
Mayfield coach Michael Bradley said Enriquez will probably play defense at UNM, although he has a big upside offensively. Enriquez started two games last season at quarterback when Sandoval was injured and led Mayfield to wins over Carlsbad and Manzano.
"I think he may like playing offense a little more than defense because he's such a playmaker," Bradley said. "He's been a slot receiver, running back and quarterback. He moves so well in space. He was born with that."
On defense, says Bradley, Enriquez has "great closing speed," and is a throwback to the days when athletes like him played both ways in college.
Bradley said the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Young is still growing and maturing.
"We didn't even think he was going to start his senior year," Bradley said. "All of a sudden he grew about three inches and started getting stronger. Obviously the confidence came with that. He has a huge upside and he's only going to get stronger and faster. UNM will reap the benefits of that."
As for Sandoval, the little quarterback with huge game may have played his last competitive football game.
Bradley said UNM wanted Sandoval to walk on, but Sandoval, who was the state's Gatorade Player of The Year as a junior, is undecided.
"He might get the itch," said Bradley. "I think he can play in a special role. At UNM he could be a punt returner, slot receiver or kickoff returner."
Mayfield is an imposing 39-1 over the last three seasons. Besides the streak of three state titles, the Trojans have been in the state championship game nine of the last 14 years and have won seven of them. They have not lost to another New Mexico school since 2004, when Clovis beat them.
The first team All-State backfield also includes Clovis senior halfback Manuel Robles, Las Cruces junior back James Hall and Eldorado senior back Logan Lippert.
Hall (5-7, 170) was the featured back on a potent Las Cruces offense that might be even better next season since the Bulldawgs return an abundant number of starters and lettermen. He rushed for 1,711 yards and scored 27 touchdowns in 2007.
"Unfortunately for the rest of us, he's only a junior," said Clovis coach Eric Roanhaus.
Lippert, a 5-11, 185-pound senior, led Eldorado with 945 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns.
Robles (6-0, 180) scored 19 touchdowns and rushed for 1,377 yards on 239 carries in 12 games.
"He's more of a power runner than Hall," Roanhaus said. "Hall has quick feet and Manuel is a slasher."
