ALBUQUERQUE -- Two dozen high school and junior college recruits made their commitments to The University of New Mexico football program official on Wednesday, the first day of the spring national signing period.
New Lobos head coach Bob Davie announced he had filled 24 of the 25 available scholarship slots for next season and that four of the players have already enrolled at UNM.
Hired in November to replace the outgoing staff of former head coach Mike Locksley and interim coach George Barlow, Davie said he and his assistants only had three full weeks to scour the country looking for players.
The group found 12 players in the state of Texas, including the only running back on the list, incoming freshman Carlos Wiggins out of Plano West High School. At 5-foot-8, 165 pounds, he is the smallest player Davie signed.
But like the rest, he said he'll get a shot to play next fall.
"We're down," Davie said, referring to the number of scholarship players the Lobos have returning in 2012. "I don't have a definitive number, but it's low."
Only three new recruits hail from New Mexico: Quarterback Cole Gautsche out of reigning Class AAAAA state champion Cleveland High School, offensive lineman Josh Baggett out of Rio Rancho High School and former Goddard and New Mexico Military Institute quarterback David Vega.
Four players are slotted for the defensive line while another 10 are linebackers or defensive backs. Davie said only time will tell if his recruits will pan out.
"I'm not standing here saying we hit a home run with 24 guys," he said. "Truth is, I haven't even seen most of my [current] players yet. We just don't know."
He added: "When you bring in 24 guys somebody's going to break your heart."
The Lobos finished 1-11 each of the past three seasons under Locksley and Barlow. Of the four players who offered verbal commitments to Barlow's staff, the only one to actually sign his national letter of intent was Baggett.
