The Isotopes did all they could to give away Thursday’s game against Round Rock, but luckily for them, Aaron Heilman gave it right back.
Jerry Sands hit a walkoff home run off the Express closer to propel Albuquerque to a dramatic 10-9 win in Pacific Coast League action at Isotopes Park. Tyler Henson’s solo shot in the eighth set the stage for Sands’ two-run blast.
It kept the home team from having to explain blowing a three-run lead. Sands two-run double and Trent Oeltjen’s two-run jack early on staked the ‘Topes a 5-2 edge heading into the sixth inning, but the Express exploded for five runs in the frame. Dusty Brown’s grand slam, off Isotopes’ reliever Will Ledezma, pushed the Express ahead 7-5.
Round Rock added insurance runs in the seventh, off Matt Katta’s RBI single and Luis Hernandez’s sacrifice fly, to make it 9-5, but it wasn’t enough. Sands was 2-for-4 with four RBI.
