ALBUQUERQUE — Despite an improved performance during Tuesday's final round of the Class AAAA State Girls Golf Championships, Santa Fe High came up a handful of shots short of its goal of finishing in the top five.

Led by Allie Fullerton's 90, the Demonettes shot a 384, but it wasn't enough to overcome the three-stroke advantage Los Alamos held entering the day at The University of New Mexico Championship Course.

Actually, both the Lady Hilltoppers, who shot a 382, and Santa Fe High slid a spot as Albuquerque Academy jumped from sixth to fourth. Deming held onto its first-round lead to win the team title.

Belen sophomore Taylar Jaramillo shot a second round 76 to win the individual title with a 158.

On the boys' side, Thomas Herrera of Los Alamos finished with an 86 for a two-round total of 170, tying for 19th. Roswell Goddard won the team title with a 640 and Albuquerque Academy's Max Dawkins overcame a six-stroke deficit by shooting a 72 to win the individual title.

Española Valley's Beverly Williams was the top local girl, shooting an 87 Tuesday to finish with a 183, good for ninth overall.

"Everything was going good," Williams said. "My driving. My second shots. My putting. I was dropping my putts."

Collecting a birdie on the 323-yard, par 4 turned out to be a highlight for Williams as she played her final high school round.

"My drive was straight down the middle," Williams said. "Then I stuck my second shot within 10 feet."

After the pinpoint wedge, Williams rolled in the birdie putt.

"It was really nice ending my high school golf with an 87," Williams said. "It was strange on the back nine, thinking this was going to be my last high school tournament."

Fullerton finished just behind Williams with an overall 184 after a 90, helping the Demonettes slice 10 strokes off their total from the previous day.

"They really improved (Tuesday)," said Leonard Baca, Santa Fe High head coach. "I'm proud of the girls. They worked hard. We're looking forward to next year."

The Demonettes will have everybody back except for Fullerton, who is graduating early and has hopes of playing in college. She said she plans to walk on at either Florida State or New Mexico.

She could have finished much better except ...

"I had four balls out of bounds," Fullerton said. "It's not like I hit it way left or way right. I just had bad luck."

She also struggled early with her putter.

"I probably could have had an 81 or an 82," Fullerton said. "This was just the second time playing a full round here so the greens were hard to read."

Robyn West also turned in a decent round for Santa Fe High, finishing with a 96.

"I'm kind of disappointed," she said. "I was hitting the ball (off the tee) and I was getting to the greens. But my putting was off. I was getting nervous when I walked up to the ball. I pushed the ball left or right."

With another year, though, West plans to gain from this experience.

"I'm just going to use this to prepare myself for next year," the junior said. "I'll know a little more about to expect. I'll be more mature and I'll have more experience. I'll work on my game this summer and in the fall and see what happens."
