Frank Lucero and Lucy Lindley weren't necessarily eyeing history.
They were simply looking for the right fit.
In Lindley, Lucero saw everything he wanted in a head basketball coach.
That's a boys head coach.
Lindley, who spent last season in charge of the girls program at Monte del Sol, accepted the boys position Monday afternoon, replacing Jonathan Haack, who resigned after three seasons.
"Basketball knowledge is basketball knowledge," Lindley said. "It doesn't matter about your gender or your age."
Lindley is believed to be the first female head coach of a high school boys basketball team at the varsity level in the state. One of her role models is Nancy Lieberman.
Lieberman, the Hall of Fame basketball player, was named head coach of the Texas Legends of the NBA D-League in November 2009, becoming the first woman to coach men at the professional level.
"Ever since she got that job, I've been interested in a similar challenge," Lindley said.
Exit, Haack.
Enter, Lucero.
Enter, Lindley.
"We're excited about it," Lucero, Monte del Sol athletic director, said. "We love Lucy's energy and her enthusiasm. We believe it's a great fit for our guys."
Haack guided the Dragons to a 13-14 record in 2010-2011. They year before, they were 5-22.
"It isn't about wins and losses," Lucero said of Haack's contributions to the school and to the program. "Jonathan was instrumental in building numbers. We were able to field high school and junior high teams. He gave us good, strong numbers."
It's a foundation strong enough to build upon.
"I want to thank Jonathan for what he's done for this school," Lindley said. "We talked a lot about basketball last season. He did a lot for this program and he is going to be missed."
Lindley knows Haack remains only a BlackBerry away.
Yet, she was on the receiving end once the announcement went public.
"A few have already called me," Lindley said of her new players. "They all know my background, and I coached a handful of them in track. I think they are excited."
Lindley is.
And not just about the Dragons.
The Lady Dragons were 12-15 last season. In the previous three years, the team won a combined four games.
"I feel confident that someone can come in here and continue that confidence we built last season," Lindley said. "The girls are really excited about wanting to keep it going. Sometimes, I was a little much for them, with what I was trying to do. But they hung with it.
"The girls were so much fun and they got me in the door at Monte del Sol. But I felt like I needed a different challenge."
She found one.
And, regardless of wins and losses, it will be historic.
