Mesa Vista did more work in one quarter Friday night than most teams do in a half.

Because of that work, the Trojans are now in control of the District 7AA race following a 74-60 win over visiting Dulce in Ojo Caliente. At 12-9 overall, they are the leaders with a 3-0 record and three games remaining in the regular season.

"We scored a lot of points, but it was our defense -- it just kind of stunned them," said Thomas Vigil, Mesa Vista head coach. "We forced them into mistakes and that got our offense going."

Evan Jaramillo led four Trojans in double figures with 21 points.

Lucas Gallegos had 15, Sean Richardson 12 and Dominic Torrez another 12 off the bench.

Dominic Panzy had a game-high 24 for Dulce.

Mesa Vista's lead was 48-32 at halftime and 65-43 heading into the final quarter.

"We had four 3-pointers in the first quarter, and when you hit shots like that right away, it really does make a difference," Vigil said. "We just started getting up and down and began knocking down shots."

ST. MICHAEL'S 68, SANTA FE INDIAN 29

The second-ranked Horsemen prepared for the final week of the regular season with a blowout win in Perez-Shelley Memorial Gymnasium.

Twelve of the 13 players who got onto the floor for St. Michael's scored, led by Matt Barela's 10. Antonio Garcia and Alex Saiz each had nine.

The Horsemen (19-5 overall, 5-2 5AAA) strolled to a commanding 24-6 lead after one quarter and held a 45-14 lead at halftime.

SFIS (0-24, 0-6) responded by scoring one point in the third quarter and trailed 59-15 heading into the final period.

Austin Nieto led the Braves with 13 points.

ABQ. HOPE CHRISTIAN 82, POJOAQUE VALLEY 51

Arren Wells added to his school-record career point total by dropping in a game-high 20 as the top-ranked Huskies cruised past District 5AAA host Elks (8-17, 2-5) in Ben Luján Gymnasium.

The 6-foot-7 senior had his way in the low post from start to finish as Hope (23-1, 6-0) clinched at least a tie for the district's regular season title.

Only losses in both of the Huskies' remaining games, coupled with an unblemished end from either St. Michael's or Sandia Prep will prevent them from wrapping up the overall top seed.

Hope opened with a 25-15 edge in the first quarter.

After leading by 17 at halftime, the Huskies allowed Pojoaque to get within 12 in the third quarter before pulling away down the stretch.

Tommy Riley added 11 points for Hope while Matthew Herrera had 12 and Robert Ortiz 10 for the Elks.

LOS ALAMOS 56, ESPAñOLA VALLEY 45

The Hilltoppers were ready for whatever Española was going to throw at them. Their response came in the form of Nathan Carver, who scored a team-high 17 points.

"We ran some new offense this week," said Fil Dominguez, Los Alamos head coach. "We knew Española would run some junk defense on us. Nathan stepped up and hit some big shots for us."

The wrinkle helped Los Alamos (10-14, 3-4) to a 28-18 lead at the half and a 44-34 advantage entering the fourth.

Nick Baker supported Carver with 10 points, and Thomas Russell added nine.

SANTA FE WALDORF 84, WALATOWA 65

Josh Hagan, Elliot Radsliff, Edgar Davila and Daniel McCormick combined for all but four of the Wolves' points in a District 1B win over the visiting Cougars.

Hagan had a game-high 26 points while Radsliff had 20 and Davila 19.

Waldorf (12-7, 2-1) travel to district leader Wagon Mound on Saturday.

The Wolves led 39-35 at halftime, then slowly pulled away thanks to a high-octane offense that was simply too much for Walatowa to contain.

"We basically outran them," said Rob Clifford, Wolves head coach. "We started getting out on the break and just kept running away from them."
