A slumbering offense woke up Wednesday.
The Albuquerque Isotopes found a way to get on the scoreboard after 27 innings of futility. A seven-run outburst in the sixth inning of a 9-5 win over the Memphis Redbirds in Pacific Coast League baseball before a crowd of 6,362 at Isotopes Park finally put an end to the streak.
The Isotopes, who hadn't scored since the fifth inning of Sunday's 10-5 loss to the Omaha Royals, looked inept until the sixth. The frame started with no hint of promise as Chin-lung Hu's single was sandwiched around two outs.
Then came five hits and a pair of walks. Jamie Hoffman started the rally with a single and Tony Abreu finished it with a single. Luis Maza punctuated the outburst, though, with a grand slam that thrust Albuquerque to a 7-4 lead.
The outburst turned righthander Jason Schmidt (2-0) from a potential loser into the winning pitcher after giving up four runs over six innings.
Notes:
Right-handed knuckleballer Charlie Haeger was the lone Isotope named to the PCL All-Star team for the Triple-A All-Star Game on July 15 in Portland, Ore. He has a league-high eight wins to go with a 3.75 ERA.
