Pecos kept its eye on the District 2AA prize with a comfortable 67-50 road win against Monte del Sol on Thursday night in the Genoveva Chavez Community Center.
Aaron Lujan led three Panthers in double figures with 15 points. Paul CdeBaca had 13 and Johnny Quintana 10.
Pecos improved to 18-5 overall, 4-2 in district. The Dragons are 5-17, 0-6.
The Panthers struggled through the first half and carried a 30-25 lead into halftime. A 23-11 run in the third quarter ended the suspense.
"Give them [the Dragons] credit for playing hard and coming out ready to play," said Clyde Sanchez, Pecos head coach. "All we wanted was to win this game and keep up with [district leaders] Mora and Santa Fe Prep."
Monte del Sol head coach Lucy Lindley felt her team missed a few baskets in the first half.
"I thought we played poorly to be down five at the half," Lindley said. "We missed five or six layups."
Rico Gallegos and Javier Koerdell each had 13 points to lead Monte del Sol. Denis Mares had 12.
WAGON MOUND 85, WALATOWA 46
Class B's second-ranked Trojans (17-5, 3-0) got 27 points from Chris Cruz, 18 from Jose Aguilar and 14 from Eric Olguin in a District 1B rout of the visiting Cougars.
Walatowa kept the game close through the first quarter.
An 11-10 deficit, however, turned into a 15-point hole at halftime. By the end of the third quarter the margin ballooned to 57-36.
GIRLS
MORA 66, SANTA FE PREPARATORY 23
It was another Rangerettes blowout, but Mora head coach Mark Cassidy would like for his team to be pushed.
He knows there is one team in District 2AA that can do that, and it wasn't Prep.
"Oh, I am worried about Peñasco next weekend," Cassidy said. "They have two bigs and their bigs are good."
Even though Rangerettes forward Andrea Romero, the tallest player on the team, is as tall as the Blue Griffins' smallest starter, she and her teammates used their speed and court sense to dismantle the host in Prep Gymnasium.
A 29-4 second quarter gave Mora (22-2, 5-1) a 44-9 lead at the break.
"They are good at seeing the court and are quick," said Anika Amon, Prep head coach.
Romero had 15 points, while Chantel Rivera added 14. Prep (6-16, 1-5) had Maddy Fort scored nine.
TAOS 57, WEST LAS VEGAS 41
Marisol Martinez had a game-high 18 points to lead the Lady Tigers (16-6, 2-1) to a District 2AAA win over the Lady Dons.
Martinez drained a couple of 3-pointers in the first quarter, helping Taos race to an insurmountable 15-4 lead after one period. The lead grew to 29-14 at halftime.
Marissa Mares had 10 points and Brittany Gonzales nine for the Lady Tigers while Michelle Tapia had a team-high 12 for West Las Vegas (7-15, 1-2).
WEDNESDAY'S GAMES
SANTA FE HIGH 45, LOS ALAMOS 35
The Demonettes climbed a hurdle by rallying from a 22-19 deficit by outscoring the Lady Hilltoppers 26-13 in the second half of a District 2AAAA game in Griffith Gymnasium.
Mariah Solano led Santa Fe High (15-6, 5-1) with 14 points, while Jackie Martinez and Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage each had nine. MacKenzie Logan topped all Los Alamos scorers with nine.
ESPAñOLA VALLEY 59, CAPITAL 21
The Lady Sundevils continued to keep pace with Santa Fe High for the top spot in 2AAAA by dispatching the Lady Jaguars in Edward Medina Gymnasium.
Ashlynn Trujillo and Lauren Quintana had 12 points to lead Española (21-3, 5-1).
Capital relied on Alyssa Garcia and Stephanie Oellien, who each had six.
