Taos has a little more than one week until District 2AAA play begins and the Lady Tigers hope that scoring will be a little easier to come by than it was in Thursday's game at Peñasco.
Taos (13-5) prevailed 37-33, but only scored 12 second-half points.
Going into the break, the Lady Panthers (8-8) had a 26-23 lead with the help of Marcela Sanchez's and Abigail Soto's presence in the post.
When everything was said and done, Sanchez had 10 points while Soto put in 14 — both figures the Lady Tigers' coaching staff could live with.
Taos knew coming in that it couldn't stop Peñasco's post game, but it had to do everything it could to slow it.
So that's what the Lady Tigers did.
Despite the dismal offensive show, they stifled the Peñasco attack, allowing just seven points in the final two quarters.
Taos' Elizabeth Winter finished with a team-high 14 points and Brittany Gonzales added eight.
MONTE DEL SOL 51, DESERT ACADEMY 38
Alysia Lujan's 26-point, 13-rebound night is just a small example of the success the Lady Dragons found against the Lady Wildcats in the Driscoll Center.
"As a team, everyone played a good game as far as defense and running the offense," said Ralph Casaus, Monte del Sol head coach.
Alicia Roybal added 11 points for the Lady Dragons and Jennifer Gutierrez ripped down 11 boards to add to her own eight-point night.
Estrella Flores scored 24 for Desert Academy.
PECOS 43, TUCUMCARI 39
The Lady Panthers (12-5) survived a 24-point fourth quarter at Tucumcari despite having to pull back on their aggressive press due to fouls.
"Anytime we were aggressive in the second half, it just didn't go our way," said Leroy Barela, Pecos head coach.
Kee Anna Trujillo almost claimed a triple-double for Pecos in the effort, recording 24 points, nine rebounds and nine steals. Diamond Montaño added 11 points.
Tucumcari's Esperanza Moncayo had a team-high 15 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter.
BOYS
POJOAQUE VALLEY 84, SANTA FE INDIAN SCHOOL 50
The streaky Elks (7-12 overall, 1-0 5AAA) opened district play with a convincing win over the visiting Braves in Ben Luján Gymnasium
Matthew Herrera headlined a list of three Pojoaque players who scored in double figures with 16 points.
Brandon Bustos added 13 and John Ainsworth put in 11.
SFIS's most dangerous weapon continues to be Jessie Magdalena, who scored 26 for the Braves (1-16, 0-1).
