Regulation wasn't enough.

Neither was overtime.

Even one round of penalty kicks couldn't settle the matter.

But when Luis Lozoya and Sky Dasher converted their penalties, the Dragons of Monte del Sol finally outlasted the Cardinals of Las Vegas Robertson 2-1 Tuesday afternoon in nondistrict boys soccer at the Municipal Recreation Complex.

The match drew 1-1 at the end of regulation, after Javier Kordell netted the equalizer in the second half from 23 yards.

"A beautiful goal," said Mazatl Galindo, Monte del Sol head coach. "It was power and precision and into the upper corner."

The Dragons trailed 2-0 in the first round of penalties. But Rickie Fierro and Silowen Zier forced a second round.

"Another heart attack," Galindo said. "But the boys pulled it off. It was a really good win."

Gabe Zamudio recorded five saves in goal for the Dragons (4-1).

CAPITAL 7, DEL NORTE 0

The Jaguars didn't have OnStar on their shots. It just seemed that way in their nondistrict victory in Albuquerque.

"Every shot we took was in the back on the net," Eugene Doyle, Capital head coach, said.

Not every shot, but the Jaguars were accurate on 70 percent.

That precision wasn't limited to their shooting.

"We had great timing and teamwork," Doyle said.

Noel Olivas notched two assists, one off a corner and another off a 40-yard pass into the box.

Jesus Nieto scored three goals for the Jaguars (3-1). Richard Ramirez added two, while Hector Oquedo and Ricas Pichardo scored one apiece. Nieto also picked up an assist.

"We played exceptionally well," Doyle said. "It was one of the most dominant matches we've played."

Kevin Gomez recorded seven saves in goal for the Jaguars.

GIRLS

SANTA FE HIGH 4, VALENCIA 2

The Demonettes tallied four unanswered goals in the second half of their nondistrict match at Ivan Head Stadium.

Valencia led 2-0 at halftime, scoring off two corner kicks.

Santa Fe High answered with a pair of goals from Lynette Bustos and single scores from Erin Duncan and Stowe McMurry.

"It showed a lot of character by us," Pat Lucero, Santa Fe High head coach, said of the rally. "We tend to play really good second-half soccer."

The Demonettes caught Valencia within the first 10 minutes after intermission. Ten minutes later, their advantage was two goals.

"I know we could put four goals on them and that's what I told the girls," Lucero said.

That was only half the story. Santa Fe High's defense completed the comeback.

The Demonettes' flat-four defense of Tiffany Trujillo, Caroline Doyle, Moriah Miller and Ravenna Osgood settled after intermission, while Emma Ensign-Church controlled the midfield.

"I was really proud of my defense," Lucero said. "They've been there day-in and day-out."

LAS VEGAS ROBERTSON 3, MONTE DEL SOL 1

The Lady Dragons' defensive strategy was flawless for 36 minutes.

The problem was the first half lasted 40 minutes.

Elena Martinez scored a pair of goals in a four-minute spurt, then added a second-half goal in the nondistrict match at the Municipal Recreation Complex.

"The girls learned how quickly something can happen if you do fall apart for only a few minutes," Justin Najaka, Monte del Sol head coach, said. "We had a specific defensive strategy and we played it well, except for that short period of four minutes."

With the wind at her back, Martinez struck twice from outside the box. Her hat trick was a right-place, right-time goal as the Lady Dragons' defense passed the ball in front of the mouth of the goal.

Monte del Sol avoided the shutout in the 66th minute on Jennifer Gutierrez's score off a Blythe Maunders assist.

Maunders was rewarded for an 80-minute effort.

"She just had an outstanding game," Najaka said. "Her defensive play and midfield play helped keep us in the game."

Robertson improves to 3-2, while the Lady Dragons dip to 3-2.
