The Española Public School District is investigating a hazing claim within the girls basketball program that occurred during the summer.

Española Valley High School athletic director Lenny Roybal confirmed Wednesday that the district is looking into a complaint by parents of a player who took part in a camp in North Carolina that was coordinated by Lady Sundevils head coach Ron Drake.

Roybal said the investigation is in the early stages, and that it should be completed by next week.

Roybal did not provide details of the allegation, but said it could be interpreted a couple of ways.

"Somebody said it was a practical joke, and another one says it was hazing," Roybal said.

Drake has routinely taken a group of players -- many of whom play in his program -- to the North Carolina camp during his stints as head coach at Santa Fe High, St. Michael's and Española.

Roybal said he did not know if the incident involved players on the varsity team, but said they were players with the program.

Drake did not comment about the situation.

Roybal said action was taken previously regarding the situation, but the parents apparently were not satisfied with it. He added that no disciplinary actions will be taken until the completion of the investigation.

Española plays at Santa Fe High on Friday in a key District 2AAAA game.

The Lady Sundevils are 17-3 and 3-1 in district play.
