The Horsemen of St. Michael's High School worked double-overtime on Labor Day.

They weren't complaining.

Not after outlasting the Hilltoppers of Los Alamos, 4-3, in nondistrict boys soccer at Christian Brothers Athletic Complex.

Jackson Baca avoided penalty kicks, scoring in the 99th minute off a rebound. It was his third goal of the match.

"It was a great game for our guys," Merritt Brown, St. Michael's head coach, said. "We knew we were going to have a pretty tough time, but our guys kept battling back, kept battling back, kept battling back."

Cooper Christensen provided Los Alamos with an early lead, scoring in the second minute. The Hilltoppers maintained that advantage until the 37th minute, when Baca headed Patrick Rodriguez's cross for the equalizer.

Leland Pascual untied the knot, running onto a through ball from Travis Fish and beating the defense.

Los Alamos struck first and last after intermission. Paul Hemez scored in the 52nd minute from 20 yards and Andy Thoma forced overtime in the 78th minute.

Baca sandwiched his second goal in between the Hilltoppers' scores in the 65th minute, beating the defense on a punt from the back.

Neither scored in the first 10-minute overtime. Baca broke the deadlock by rebounding Patrick Rodriguez's shot.

"It was some really great soccer by both sides," Brown said. "We were fortunate to come out ahead."

Arthur Dejarnette recorded nine saves for the Horsemen (5-0). Mckay Parkinson notched eight saves for the Hilltoppers (4-2).

"This is a pretty resilient group," Brown said. "We're ready to keep it going."

St. Michael's returns to District 2A-AAA play Saturday at Portales.
